New bike lane constructed in Southgate area

The first dedicated bike lane has been completed in Covington. Those who frequently bike in the Southgate area might be interested in taking a ride on it.

The bike lane was made possible by a partnership with Tri-State Trails, the city of Covington, and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6. It is 0.52 miles long and runs along West 4th Street, from Johnson Street to Garrard Street.

Based on the westbound side of 4th Street, the bike lane is in what was once the right vehicle lane, and thus is one way. It is five feet wide for riding and has a painted buffer two feet wide that separates cyclists from vehicular traffic, so that riders will feel more comfortable and safer.

News of such updated transportation options can be made known in a city and neighboring communities with flyer printing.

Traffic Impact Studies had identified the street as being larger than needed to accommodate its current volume of vehicles, so it was reduced from three to two lanes, and the width of the lanes for vehicles was also narrowed.

Mayor Ron Washington said that this is about more than ensuring that streets are safer, as it is also about connection. He added that it links the emerging Covington Central Riverfront neighborhood with the Roebling Point area, which will help to create a city that will be more accessible.
