Southgate takes a tour down cemetery lane

The Friends of Evergreen Cemetery are inviting the public to their Explore Evergreen event. The group is looking to raise awareness about cleanup efforts while providing tours, food, and a history lesson.

The centerpiece of the event is a tour through the cemetery. Opened in the 1840s, the Evergreen Cemetery is one of the oldest in Kentucky, and features some notable local historical figures including General James Taylor, Jr., the founder of Newport, and William H. Horsfall, one of the youngest soldiers in the Civil War to receive a Medal of Honor. The tour will also pass by the Shaler Battery, an earthwork that was used as part of the Defense of Cincinnati between 1861 and 1863, and the chapel at the center of the cemetery, which was first built in 1902.

In addition to the tour, visitors will be treated to refreshments while they have the opportunity to peruse Brochures and learn about the various volunteer opportunities available at Evergreen. In addition to the currently running efforts such as cemetery docent and flower donation, the event will serve as the kickoff of the ‘adopt a section’ program, where volunteers can take over the care and beautification of a part of the 250-acre cemetery.

Explore Evergreen will be held on Saturday, May 21 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery, located at 25 Alexandria Pike in Southgate. Admission is free to the public. Anyone interested in attending or volunteering should contact the group directly.
