Southgate becomes focus for food drive

The IGA Market in the Southgate Shopping Center and the Walmart in Southgate will be the drop-off locations for the annual To the Brim Community Food Drive. This is the ninth year in which donations of food items will be accepted.

The Glasgow-Barren County Community Soup Kitchen and the Community Relief Fund will be the beneficiaries of this year’s food drive.

The idea was started by Dr. Bharat Mody, a local philanthropist and retired physician. He said the motto for the campaign is that people cannot think of sleeping when there are many who go to sleep being hungry.

He added that although the economy has improved, the upswing has not yet trickled down to those who are in the greatest need, so it is up to the community to step up.

Stacy Janes, administrative coordinator for the Community Relief Fund, said that the United Way of Southern Kentucky used to support the food drive, but their requirements have changed, so that less food is coming in than before.

Canned meats, soups and fruit, breakfast items, and peanut butter are some of the primary food items the two organizations are requesting.

When food drives take place, banner printing companies can be hired to draw attention to key locations in the city people at which people can donate their non-perishable goods.
