Southgate residents who attend the new Gateway Community and Technical College campus will soon benefit from an added safety measure.
Covington announced that it plans on building a new path for both biking and walking through its central business district. To help them in this goal, a grant of $1m was received from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet under its Transportation Alternatives program.
The funds that have been granted will be used to help construct a path that is safe, accessible and easy to use for those who choose to walk or bike. It will follow Electric Alley, which runs parallel to Scott Boulevard and Madison Avenue.
According to city officials, this is just one part of their plan to upgrade the block that surrounds Gateway Community and Technical College’s new campus. They further noted that with the growth of this facility, safe transportation has become a priority, as many of students rely on either cycling or walking to get around. A company that provides printing services will be able to produce signage and other items that can also help to keep the new pathway as safe as possible.
Under the plan, there will be improved lighting, no motorized traffic, and utility wires and conduits will be move underground. It will also be paved. Its location will put it within easy reach of local restaurants and shops, and also the Kenton County’s Public Library’s Covington branch.
