Residents in Southgate and Fort Thomas are being invited to spend some time enjoying nature and improving two local parks.
The Earth and Arbor Day Celebration is a coordinated event looking to make the area a little more beautiful. This will be the second year for such a celebration.
The idea was originally thought up by Jeff Mohr and his son Conner. The two are avid park-goers and love to walk through the many trails of the Ignite Highland Hills Park. Last year, after they had to climb over several fallen trees, they decided to do something. Distributing printed Flyers around the area, they organized an all-volunteer cleanup effort.
This year, more than 100 volunteers have signed up to help with the work, and the goals of the event have grown bigger as well. Over two days, participants will work in both Ignite Highland Hills Park and Tower Park. Aside from cleanup, groups will be blazing new trails in Highland Hills while planting trees, removing honeysuckle, and cleaning up the Landmark Tree Trail at Tower Park. Volunteers this year include the Ft. Thomas Firefighters Local 1928 and bicyclists from the Cincinnati Off-Road Alliance (CORA).
The Earth and Arbor Day Celebration will take place this Friday and Saturday, April 22 and 23, starting at 8:00 am. Friday’s events will take place at Highland Hills Park while Saturday will include both Highland Hills and Tower Park. Volunteers should sign up in advance through the City of Fort Thomas website.
