Road updates to come to Southgate area

Improvements will be coming along Monmouth Street, which is the US 27 corridor between Bluegrass Avenue and 11th Street affecting the border between Southgate and Newport.

The OKI Council of Regional Governments has given the city of Newport a Surface Transportation Northern Kentucky Grant of $6.3m for this project, which is expected to cost $8m. The city of Newport will be covering the remaining costs.

Larissa Sims, Assistant City Manager of Newport, said that the project, known as the US 27 Smart Corridor Initiative, has been a partnership with Southgate and other communities in the region. Sims said that originally the plan was for streetscape improvements along the corridor but it has since become one where the current four lanes of traffic, two going each way north and south, will be transformed into three lanes. There will be one lane heading in each direction and a lane in the center for turning. Where there is significant traffic between 11th Street and Carruthers Road coming off the Interstate in the morning, there will be two lanes going northbound, along with one going southbound.

Printing services of many kinds can be used to help spread the word about such road improvements to the community through the use of Flyers.

Sims said that the bid for construction will go out early this year, and depending on weather conditions, will begin work in the spring.
