Northern Kentucky to host civics competition

The United States Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Northern Kentucky (NKY) Chamber of Commerce are partnering again to host the National Civics Bee.

Flyer printing might be used by teachers and others in the area to promote this inaugural event throughout the region.

This is a civics competition that will encourage students in middle school to contribute to their community and engage in civics. The competition is open to students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade in private, public, charter, and home schools from the area, including cities such as Southgate. Those who enter the competition will need to write an essay of 500 words that identifies a problem facing their community, and addresses how a citizen might solve the problem.

From the essays submitted, judges will select 20 students to compete in a live quiz show that will test their knowledge of civics. The top three will then go on to compete at the state level. Finalists from those states participating in this event will then be invited to Washington, D.C. to compete in the first Civics Bee national championship in Fall 2024.

Talent Strategies Vice President for the NKY Chamber, Nancy Spivey, said that through the Bee, the Chamber hopes to celebrate civic pride in today’s youth and promote a greater knowledge of civics.

The essay portal is now open, with the deadline for submissions being Monday, January 8, 2024.
