The Occupant Protection Enforcement Awards of the Governor of Kentucky were recently presented to police officers from Northern Kentucky who were recognized for their efforts in increasing the use of child restraints and seat belts in vehicles.
Awards were given to officers in each agency and in each division. There is a division for the Kentucky State Police and six divisions.
A plaque was given to all winners, one of whom was Sargent Ronnie Gross of the Southgate Police. The Highway Safety All-Star Award, which is a Louisville Slugger commemorative baseball bat in a case, was given to the top three division winners. Poster printing companies can be used to help publicize such awards to the community.
The Executive Director of the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security, Noelle Hunter, said the enforcement of occupant protection laws by these officers, their departments and agencies contributes greatly to the safety of the public. Hunter added that enforcement will be increased awareness will be raised of the importance of these life-saving measures. Officers prefer writing citations for lack of the use of car restraints or seats than other severer notifications.
The use of seat belts in Kentucky overall has increased from 67 percent in 2006 to close to 87 percent in 2017.
