Newport to undertake projects for roads and parks

Funding will be provided by the city of Newport for infrastructure projects that will update a popular riverfront park and improve a busy traffic thoroughfare. Residents of Southgate will be glad of these improvements when they visit the nearby city.

Newport is planning to improve Festival Park along the Ohio River and the Monmouth Street/U.S. 27 corridor. The updates are expected to cost around $2.5 million for Festival Park and $7 million for Monmouth Street and are being made available to the city by the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments.

The improvements along U.S 27 will include streetscapes, sidewalks, and access management and are expected to improve safety for pedestrians and traffic and access in the area. The work will be done in two phases—first along Carothers Road and then from Carothers Road to the border of the city with Southgate.

The improvements for Festival Park will run from Columbia Street east to the Purple People Bridge. Larisa Sims, Assistant City Manager, said that the city is currently working on the design of this project. Poster printing is often used throughout a city to inform residents of such projects and keep them abreast of their progress.

Another part of the project will be enhancements to Riverfront Commons, which is a walking and biking path 11.5 miles long that parallels the Ohio River and runs through the cities of Newport, Covington, Bellevue, and Dayton.
