New Kentucky route to be a game-changer in Newport-Southgate area

Construction of the last 1.4 miles of Kentucky Route 9 through Newport will restart this month. This route connects Interstate 275 and the Taylor-Southgate Bridge, which crosses the Ohio River into Cincinnati.

The cost for the project will be $4.96m and to be completed by Prus Construction Co. An opening date of December 2018 is planned. Once completed, it is expected that businesses and land along the route will become more desirable.

Newport city manager, Tom Fromme, said the route will change traffic patterns in that cars and trucks will use a more direct and better route.

Owner of New Riff Distillery, Ken Lewis, who is building a new campus in the area, added that this new road will have great impact on the city as the view of Cincinnati along the route is tremendous, so people will gather at restaurants and other venues along the route.

A Newport real estate investor, Ron Pies, who had previously invested in residential projects and has now moved to commercial ventures, said the new route will draw people from Cincinnati, as it is less expensive to operate business in Newport than across the river.
