Landmark bridge to undergo repairs for rest of year

The John H. Roebling Bridge in Northern Kentucky will be closed to all vehicular traffic in the upcoming months for a restoration project. This closure will affect traffic patterns for those who live in Southgate and the surrounding communities.

Representatives of the State Historic Preservation Office and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) are working on plans to focus on structural issues with the bridge so that it can be preserved for future generations. Chief district engineer for the District 6 office of the Department of Highways, Bob Yeager, said that pedestrian traffic over the bridge will remain open during the project.

Lithko Restoration Technologies, LLC will be the contractor for the project, which is expected to cost $4.7 million. The work will include the replacement and repair of sections of sandstone on the north and south towers and anchorages; masonry work; and minor repair to the sidewalks and deck.

The bridge is an historic suspension bridge, 154 years old and carries close to 8,100 vehicles a day. The 4th Street/Veterans Bridge which leads to the Taylor Southgate Bridge or the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge will be able to be taken by motorists as detour during the construction.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
