A resolution passed by Kentucky legislators will rename Interstate 471 as the Jim Bunning Memorial Highway after the Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher and United States Congressman.
Such significant events often use banner printing to promote themselves throughout the community.
A sponsor of the resolution and friend of Bunning, State Senator Wil Schroder, said that Bunning was a politician who remained faithful to his beliefs. Schroder added that Bunning felt it important to stand alone as long as he stood by his values and beliefs, and that he will always be an inspiration to the people of Kentucky as they remember his leadership and wisdom.
Bunning was born in 1931 in Southgate. He raised a family of nine children with his wife Mary in Fort Thomas. His first public service was for the Fort Thomas City Council and the Kentucky State Senate.
He played for both baseball leagues for 16 years, primarily for the Tigers and the Mets. He then served six terms in the United States House and two terms in the United States Senate.
Jim Hamberg, mayor of Southgate, added that Bunning’s life was one of humility. He always knew that Southgate was his home and this dedication will serve to remember his legacy, life and commitment to family and the community for many years in the future.
The dedication will be held at the Southgate Community Center tomorrow, June 21.
