The Cincinnati Zoo welcomed a baby penguin on David Bowie's 69th birthday, January 8, and has named him after the late musician.
While the penguin's birth is cause for celebration and visits from residents of nearby areas like Southgate, it also comes at a poignant time, as Bowie was born just two days before his namesake rock star passed away.
Angela Hartke, Cincinnati Zoo Communications Coordinator, told CBS News that the name Bowie was fitting because the penguin broke out of its shell with true David Bowie flair.
Shortly after the penguin was born, zookeepers began playing David Bowie's music in the baby bird's nursery. Apparently he began squeaking along.
Zoo officials were saddened to learn about the rock star's death, but said that it brought "added meaning" to the little bird's birth.
Hartke's said:
"Now there's a cute little penguin that has his namesake, bringing some good news to it."
On Facebook, zoo fans immediately began commenting on the penguin's name and the musician's recent death. A nickname for the baby bird even popped up: ‘Starman’, after the David Bowie song of the same name.
The penguin's sex has not yet been determined because it is not old enough for such identification. Bowie is a member of the blue or fairy penguin species.
Penguin-themed banner printing, brochure printing and other ad specialties may soon be in the Cincinnati Zoo's marketing in an effort to attract visitors from Southgate to Blue Ash.
