The Covington Board of Commissioners recently relaxed its regulations on food trucks to provide more locations of such trucks and to enable them to be open for longer hours. Residents of Southgate will surely want to try out these trucks once these regulations are in place.
Commissioner Michelle Williams said that these new regulations will enhance the city’s reputation as a destination for foodies, and complement the wide range of restaurants in the city. She added that food trucks are already very popular in the city and encouraged the creation of several new food truck concepts. Such new concepts could be advertised using poster printing.
The new regulations would require an operator of a food truck to apply for an annual permit at a cost of $500. This would provide access on a first come, first served basis to designated areas in parking lots owned by the city or on certain streets. The Motor Vehicle Parking Authority will receive 10 percent of the fee to reimburse it for lost revenue from the parking spots. Trucks will be able to sell food between the hours of 6:00 am and 10:00 pm with the ability to set up a half-hour before and a half-hour after these hours.
The city is working on the process to issue the permits and the Commission is working on a zoning change to allow for additional permitted locations.
