Artwork to be designed and created for Southgate area

The city of Covington is looking to install an innovative piece of art in the developing neighborhood of the Covington Central Riverfront.

The city is partnering with ArtsWave, the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr. Foundation, The Center for Great Neighborhoods (CGN), and the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center to hold a national design competition for this artwork. Residents of nearby Southgate may be interested in not only in the artwork but the competition itself.

Local Print shops can assist in spreading the word about such competitions through Flyers, mailers, and other printed materials.

CGN and the Carnegie Center have issued a formal request for proposals. The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr. Foundation is providing a grant that will cover the costs of holding the competition, the fees for the artists, and the expenses for fabrication.

Tom West, Economic Development Director, said this piece of public art will be vital to creating the environment wanted by the people of Covington.

Applications are due Tuesday, July 1. Between three and five finalists will be selected and they will receive a stipend to create more detailed drawings, scale and 3D models, or other materials to support their proposal. By Friday, August 15 the winner will be selected. The piece will be fabricated by Saturday, November 15 and installed by Sunday, November 30.
