What's Happening in London, KY…

London's sole animal control officer recognized for his work

In March, during its annual conference, the Kentucky Animal Care and Control Association named Taylor McDaniel of London and Laurel County as the animal control officer of the year. The award came as a surprise to McDaniel, who almost did not attend the conference.

The only control officer for animals in the area, McDaniel was recognized in part because of the work he did last December, when he rescued more than 170 dogs and led the staff from the county's animal shelter in keeping an eye on those dogs at an emergency shelter. After two years as an officer, McDaniel ranked the rescue at the end of last year as one of the most difficult tasks of his career.

According to a press release produced by the Kentucky Animal Care and Control Association, the organization chose McDaniel because it felt he was an excellent example of how it should be viewed. One of the goals of the organization is to improve the practice of animal control, to better inform the public about the value of animal control work, and to improve the laws protecting animals.

The Laurel County Police force can use stationery printers to further recognize its only animal control officer. McDaniel is constantly on call, and needs to be ready to spring into action if a case comes in that involves animal cruelty or an animal otherwise in need.
