London readies floats for holiday parade

Thanksgiving hasn't yet happened, but that isn't stopping people in London planning ahead for the next holiday.

The organizers of Christmas on Main are already preparing for the official launch of the annual event, taking place early next month. The theme for this year is ‘Rocking Around the Christmas Tree’.

Planned festivities include a Book Walk through the downtown area and the Randy Smith Christmas on Main Parade, which begins at 7:30 pm.

To encourage greater participation from school groups and other area organizations, city council and Troy Rudder, the mayor of London, are sponsoring a cash prize this year. Prizes will be given to three winners from schools in Laurel County. Entire schools, sports teams, and clubs are eligible to enter a float in the parade and to enter the contest, as long as they are affiliated with a Laurel County School. There is no limit on the number of participants a single school can have.

City council and the Mayor can use flyer printing to get the word out about the prizes to area schools. Prizes range from $250 for third place, $500 for second, and $1,000 for the grand prize. To be eligible for the prize, the float needs to stick to the theme of this year's parade.

Floats are not the only entries eligible for prizes. There will also be plaques for best business participation and plaques for the best decorated fire truck, golf cart, and other type of vehicle
Christmas on Main takes place on December 4.
