Youth bike program receives grant

A grant worth $13,500 has been awarded to the city of Lexington so that it can purchase bicycles to be used within youth programs in the city.

In total, 32 bikes will be purchased. They will be used by city staff who provide classes for the youth and group rides during afterschool programs and summer camps. The students will also take classes on bike maintenance and safety while they gain the experience they need to ride confidently on the roads.

The Lexington Police Department also plans to use the bikes to teach a mobile safety curriculum being held at Safety City, where there is a small roadway designed to teach students about traffic signals. Safety City is made up of miniaturized buildings that include a police department, a fire station, and a restaurant. Graphic design can be used to create road Signs.

While the city adds more mixed-use trails and bike lanes, efforts are also being made to ensure that the young people on bikes are familiar with safety procedures for cyclists. Giving them the confidence and skills needed to cycle on the roads will help to ensure that the next generation is making use of alternative Forms of transport. How to stay safe while riding scooters or walking will also be discussed.

The Department for Environmental Quality and Public Works worked together with the Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization to apply for the grant.
