Lexington announces hiking event to welcome spring weather

A hiking event is being planned in Lexington for this April, and area residents and hikers who are ready to embrace the warmth of spring are invited to join.

The Long Hike with the Wildflowers expedition is on the horizon in Lexington, with organizers and hike leaders taking participants on a four-to-five mile hike through a local nature preserve. They will explore the Elk Lick Valley, giving those who join an opportunity to appreciate the diversity and growth of native wildflowers in their native habitat.

The journey will include several stops at vistas and points of interest, including Floracliff’s oldest living tree, Elk Lick Falls, and Elk Lick Creek. The tree, a chinquapin oak, dates back to 1611. The Floracliff Naturalists will lead registered guests along the chosen trail, which is rated at moderate-to-strenuous. Print shops can help organizers provide hikers at such events with Brochures containing information about local wildlife and a map of the trail.

The trail may contain some slick surfaces. Guests are encouraged to bring water and snacks, along with a lightweight pack to carry these items. HIking poles, binoculars, and cameras are also encouraged.

Hikers will meet at the Floracliff Nature Sanctuary in Lexington at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 18. The hike is expected to take five hours. Registration costs $17.85 per participant online.
