The Lexington Senior Center has received a new sculpture thanks to the generosity of a member, and an artist and professor at the University of Kentucky.
The artist who created the sculpture is Gary J. Bibbs, professor at the University of Kentucky School of Art. Made of metal and positioned on the wall, the piece is called "Being Alive”.
This sculpture was commissioned by a member of the senior center, Kirk Kopitzke, and was donated to Friends of the Lexington Senior Center.
When planning the sculpture, Kopitzke solicited advice from senior artists about design and format. He says he is “deliriously happy” the piece, created to honor his deceased wife.
This sculpture is six feet in diameter and made with steel and bronze. The frame has the outline of the woman exercising her dog, based on a photo that Kirk took of his wife Betsy and their dog. He wanted the sculpture to reflect the joy of living.
Kristy Stambaugh, director of Aging and Disability Services says she hopes other seniors and residents may want to donate paintings and sculptures to the center.
Bibbs received a bachelor of the arts degree from the University of Kentucky and has completed several artistic projects in the community.
This sculpture can now be seen in the Lexington Senior Center. Printers design and provide poster printing for organizations and projects like this.
