Food Connection helps local farms find new customers

When the University of Kentucky in Lexington closed its dining halls temporarily, The Food Connection and Blue Grass Farm to Table program designed a plan to help local farmers.

They called on Alice Chamber, who runs the Food Connection – a division of food company Creation Gardens. It acts as a middleman between the dining services at the university and farmers.

They are offering consumers direct access to buy fresh produce and food products that they would usually serve in the dining halls.

Available items will be meat, butter, oil, vinegar, eggs, herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Several local farms will participate in the program. Customers can order food online at Creation Gardens online platform. Orders must be in by 10:00 pm on Tuesdays.

The community supported agricultural program at University of Kentucky has a few pickup locations in Lexington for customers on Thursdays. One is a farm stand at Horticultural Research Farm, Great Bagel and Bakery, and Smithtown Seafood.

This network of local food partners has helped them quickly put together a plan for local farmers, says Ashton Potter Wright director of local food and agricultural development for the Bluegrass Farm to Table program.

This new food distribution program is open to the public, students and school employees. It will give the community another way to access fresh nutritious food. Printers design and provide flyer printing for programs like this.
