One of Lexington's beloved institutions, the Lexington Farmers Market, will undergo significant changes.
Starting in 2024, the market's Tuesday-Thursday morning sessions, which have been held at the corner of Broadway and Maxwell for several decades, will be relocated.
The vacant corner lot will be required to accommodate construction vehicles for the upcoming development project on High Street, expected to commence next year. The local farmer vendors, along with their assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables for sale, must now relocate. John Garey, president of the Lexington Farmers Market board and owner of Garey Farms, stated that the Lexington Center Corporation (which is responsible for managing the Lexington Convention Center, the Lexington Opera House, and Rupp Arena) has set a December deadline for the market to vacate the corner. Vendors like to use banner printing for their stalls.
According to Garey, the weekday market typically concludes in November, so it is unlikely to be affected this year. However, next year will present a new challenge. A potential solution has arisen: the relocation of the weekday market, and potentially the winter market as well, to National Avenue.
Developer Chad Walker has put forth a proposal to transform a vacant lot located at the intersection of National Avenue and Ashland Avenue, adjacent to Mirror Twin, into a parking lot with facilities that the Lexington Farmers Market can utilize during the weekdays from spring to fall, and on weekends during the winter season.
