County Clerk announces retirement

Don Blevins, Jr. has announced that he will be retiring from his post as the Fayette County Clerk after working for the county for 13 years.

This announcement was made just a month after Blevins was reelected to serve for a fourth term. Blevins’ successor will be selected by the new Fayette County Judge Executive, Mary Dianne McCord.

When asked about his reasons for retiring at this time, Blevins commented:

“We all know that ‘life happens’ on its own calendar. My personal life has seen significant change in the last year and will require my time and energy going forward such that I cannot give the county clerk role what it requires.”

Blevins was first appointed to the role in 2009 when he took over his father’s unexpired term. Blevins Jr. worked for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council before that. During the election for his latest term, Blevins Jr. beat his challenger by taking 67% of the tally. This was the only time since 2009 that Blevins Jr. had been challenged in a general election. Flyer printing is often used as part of election campaigns like this one.

Blevins will remain at his post until the end of January, which should provide ample time to find a successor. The role of the Fayette County Clerk involves overseeing the registration and titling of vehicles and permanent housing records. The office employs more than 75 people and collects almost $100m in taxes every year.
