Accredited institutions where 25 percent of undergraduate students enrolled full time are classified as Hispanic are granted this designation. Dr. Christopher Sindt, president of Lewis University, said:
“Becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution is an important moment in the history of Lewis University, but it is not our destination. Our focus is on ensuring that every student feels they belong, has access to meaningful opportunities and receives the support necessary to thrive. Our commitment is not simply to be an HSI by enrollment, but to become an HSI by design.”
The HSI by Design framework of the university takes a holistic approach to student success that reaches beyond enrollment metrics. The University is building practices, programs, learning experiences, support systems, and partnerships that support persistence and enable students to thrive. Current efforts include gathering assessing climate, campus feedback, expanding family engagement, supporting bilingual and multilingual courses, strengthening inclusive teaching, and advancing initiatives that promote student achievement.
News of such designations can be disseminated throughout a college community and the region with flyer printing.
