The good news was announced by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS). Its Director, Theresa Eagleson, stated:
“With these settings, those facing a truly difficult challenge can get the right kind of care and protection to help them lead safe and healthy lives. These settings also help to bring vital peace of mind to their loved ones.”
The units will be ready for occupation over the course of three years, but most are expected to be ready by 2020. Corporate Gifts and donations such as bath towels and other home items would no doubt be well received by such programs.
The program is called the Supportive Living Program (SLP). The HFS would like it to be used in conjunction with nursing homes struggling to keep up with the demand for care tailored to the elderly and physically handicapped. Medicaid feels that SLP is a better alternative because it promotes independence and privacy.
People living in SLP homes will be able to determine their own schedules for care. They will also have access to laundry, systems for emergency calls, routine checkups from qualified nurses, and help with daily activities.
The SLP started 23 years ago and now works with 152 healthcare providers serving more than 10,000 apartments.
