Next month, the Morton Grove Park District will host the 8th Annual Assyrian Food Festival to showcase the flavors, sounds, and cultural traditions of Morton Grove’s Assyrian community.
The two-day festival will showcase Assyrian cuisine and traditions while also educating the public about the Assyrian heritage of their fellow community members. Indigenous to West Asia and the Middle East, Assyrians are a Semitic people with a history ranging over 3,000 years with an ancestral home often described as the “cradle of civilization.” Chicago and, by extension, Morton Grove boasts one of the largest Assyrian populations in the US, with approximately 100,000 members as part of the community.
The event will feature traditional music and dance performances, along with other cultural exhibitions. Authentic food such as grilled kabobs, samosas, dolmas, biryani, and baklava will also be served. Non-Assyrian attendees are encouraged to mix and mingle with their Assyrian neighbors and learn more about this vibrant community that has become part of the diverse fabric of American culture.
