Thrifty gardeners know that seed saving and swapping can help them add to their personal plant collection without having to spend a lot, as an upcoming Morton Grove area event will prove.
This year’s 10th Annual Seed Swap will offer those who attend a chance to obtain seeds, share some they already have, and talk to other gardeners. Since several demonstrations are also on the agenda for the day, it can also be an opportunity to learn new horticultural skills.
The day is set to begin at 11:00 am, and at 11:30 am, the crowd will be invited to sit in on a demo that will teach them how to prepare their own seed starting soil. At noon, the class will shift gears and discuss the practice of vermicomposting, which is the practice of composting with a little help from earthworms. At 1:00 pm, there will be a seed starting presentation, and this is all being offered free of charge.
Everyone who attends the function is invited to bring along their extra seeds to share, and self-grown, packaged, and heirloom seeds will all be welcome. A seed cleaning station will be on site, and the assembled group can get to know other members of the area’s gardening community.
