Thanks to an agreement between Oakton Community College and the Niles Township High Schools District 219, students are now able to transfer their credits for enrollment in math classes.
The Board of Education approved this move. This means that students can transfer their placement credits to a number of colleges all over Illinois, including Morton Grove.
The new agreement is only applicable to Probability and Statistics as well as Intermediate Algebra. The students who take advantage of this agreement will be saved from taking remedial math classes when they join college.
Niles North High School is a well-performing school in District 219 with a Viking on its Logo Design, whose students will benefit from this agreement. School officials say that up to 35% of its students go directly to community college after high school. Joe Obrycki, the school’s math director, stated that:
“We’re very excited about it. We had a previous agreement that was beneficial for students, but came with administrative downsides for us. Now it’s transferable not just to Oakton, but to any community college in Illinois.”
The agreement in Oakton is based on similar transitional math courses that are implemented statewide. It is backed by the Illinois State Board of Education, as well as the Illinois Board of Higher Education. The new agreement also allows the schools in District 219 to select their own students and teachers, and gives them more freedom when setting up lesson plans.
