The move was unanimously voted in favor of by the village board in Morton Grove after village staff made a special request for the move. The deal is an intergovernmental agreement between Morton Grove and Cook County. The parcel of land in question is almost 3.5 acres and is situated to the northwest of Oakton Street.
Morton Grove has been licensed to use the property since the 1950s. Morton Grove already has a water pump set up on the location and it taps into an underground water reservoir. The village staff believes that it would be more efficient moving forward if Morton Grove owned the land rather than continuing to license it. Ralph Czerwinski, who is the Village Administrator, said:
“Sometimes it is a little difficult to get through county processes to enhance security to enhance water supply. The staff believes this is a good action for the village.”
Homeland Security has stated that sources of water are susceptible to natural disasters and attacks from criminals. Taking over the site makes it easier for officials from Morton Grove to protect the village’s source of water. Payments for the property will be made in 10 installments, which will start being paid in June 2021 and are expected to be completed in 2030.
