Library dances into spring

Last month, the Morton Grove Public Library held its inaugural monthly Family Dance Party. Children, parents, and grandparents alike packed the library’s activity room in what was a successful pilot party.

Storytime is the main part of the party. After that, the kids and their caregivers are encouraged to dance while playing with tambourines, scarves, and shakers. A bubble machine was brought out at the end of the session.

The library’s administration would like to host these parties once a month. The exact dates will depend on whether the month has four or five weeks in it and if the parties can be scheduled in a manner that does not clash with story time. People who attend the party can use it as an opportunity to apply for library cards, which will be printed immediately on Stationery printers.

The aim of Family Dance Party is to get the children comfortable with reading from an early age. The children’s caregivers can also use the party as a way to learn how to provide kids with the tools that will increase their literacy skills. These literacy skills can be enhanced by incorporating playing, talking, singing, reading and writing into the children’s daily schedules.

The parties last for 45 minutes and the next one is scheduled for May 30. The party will be suspended during June and July because of the Summer Reading Program.
