Michael Frazier, a graduate from Maine South High School near Morton Grove, saved a fellow student’s life by administering CPR. The Park Ridge Fire Department rewarded him for his quick thinking with a scholarship to attend Harper College.
A corporate gift such as this one can go a long way in improving a recipient’s life.
The decision was made after a Park Ridge City Council Meeting on August 5th. Michael will now be able to attend Harper College where he wishes to learn how to become an emergency medical technician and paramedic. Michael expected that he would have to pay the $10,000 bill for the course on his own however he now has a full scholarship thanks to his actions which Mayor Martley Malone and Police Chief Frank J. Kaminski referred to as ‘heroic’.
The incident happened back in April. Kevin Tomsia was jogging around the high school’s track when he suddenly collapsed. Kevin woke up in the hospital several hours later and in that time he’d stopped breathing and gone into cardiac arrest. Lucky for him, Frazier was in a P.E class nearby and had undergone training as a lifeguard which was why he had the expertise to identify that Kevin was going into cardiac arrest. Kevin survived the incident thanks to Frazier’s quick and expert actions along with the help of about two dozen other people.
Everybody involved, including fire department officials and school members, was recognized by the Park Ridge City Council.
