If reports are accurate, it would seem that questions over road safety were what got these billboards shut down by the committee.
"A lot of aldermen feel they are too bright and can cause people to not pay attention to their driving ,” (sic.) Chairman Ald. John Robinson told Journal Online.
The same article then goes on to explain that:
“…While many communities allow electronic billboards, many do not. The fact that major interstate highways bisect through Des Plaines makes space along the highways attractive to billboard companies. A large number of regular billboards, of which many of them are illuminated at night, are located along local tollways. One digital billboard exists in Des Plaines along Interstate 90, but its face is covered because its owners never received city permission for it to operate…” (sic.)
With their ability to draw attention during the night, digital billboards are largely considered a high visibility method of drawing eyes. Although safety concerns have prevented the use of electronic billboards, it’s important to note that local business owners still have alternative options that can work just as well.
For starters, banner printing is a solution that works for entrepreneurs. A banner will take up more or less the same amount of space while also helping companies promote themselves. By the same token, poster printing is another service to ask local Print companies about.
Although these measures may force teams to adjust their strategies, Des Plaines professionals can still promote themselves here.
