Friends of the Chicago River is inviting locals to help with the yearly clean-up.
Each year, numerous volunteers gather to promote community engagement and understand the detrimental effects of litter on their local and quality of water. Over 70 sites, stretching from North Chicago and Morton Grove to Riverdale and Summit, are available throughout the watershed. While some areas have experienced a decrease in litter thanks to past efforts, volunteers will also participate in further stewardship activities such as invasive species removal and trail maintenance.
This year’s Chicago River Day marks the beginning of the Friends' Litter Free Chicago-Calumet River program, a year-long initiative dedicated to removing litter through clean-up events both on land and in canoes.
Those who sign up to volunteer for Chicago River Day before May 5 receive a commemorative T-shirt as a token of appreciation. Registration for the event will remain open until a site reaches full capacity. Children aged eight and above are welcome to participate as volunteers, while younger members of the family may observe the activities under adult supervision. Interested individuals must register individually, and a guardian is required to register on the behalf of those under 18. Promotional Products could be used to promote community events.
During the registration process, volunteers are required to read and accept the waivers digitally. This implies that each individual must register independently, and guardians must register on behalf of their underage children. The clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, May 13.
