The Chicago Bears made a visit to Maine East High School as part of a campaign to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.
The event was called Monsters of the Midway. People who attended were met with life-size bobbleheads, cheerleaders with pompoms, the opportunity to scrimmage with professional football players, and lots of people wearing pink. The organizers, Advocate Health Care and the Chicago Bears, held the event on September at Maine East High School’s Memorial Stadium a few miles east of Morton Grove.
The football players were met at the tunnel by breast cancer survivors. One of them was Edina Zvizdic from Niles, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018.
Regular screenings are important because the disease is more manageable if it is caught early. According to data from the Breast Center at Advocate Lutheran General, a woman in the US is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes. The event at Maine East High School concluded with a ceremony that honored survivors of breast cancer. Patients currently living with the disease were encouraged to get on stage to get moral support from the crowd.
