What's Happening in McHenry, IL…

Pair of historical sites set be preserved

Two structures with historic significance in Illinois are scheduled to get plaques in October.

The plaques will be issued by the Historic Sites Committee from the McHenry County Historical Society. They have decided to officially place a plaque at the Schmitt Chapel site located at 2500 N. Chapel Hill Road on 19th October at 1:00 pm. Frederick Schmitt built this historic chapel in 1843 just south of Johnsburg.

Schmitt built the chapel when he first arrived from Germany. The ship that carried him to the United States went through a severe storm on the way, and Schmitt vowed that he would build a chapel if the ship survived the voyage. The Chapel is officially a part of the Chapel Hill Country Club which has been owned by the village for two years.

The other site that will receive a plaque is the Ford School, which was built in 1886. This site would have been given a plaque several years ago however there was a long wait for the reconstitution of the McHenry County Historic Preservation Committee. The Ford School will be landmarked at a special ceremony held on 23rd October at 6:00 pm. Banner printing could be used to give tourists more information about the historical significance of these landmarked sites.

The recommendations for landmarking these sites were made back in July and the County Board approved of the idea on 20th August.
