McHenry County improves its building code rating

The ISO (Insurance Services Office) has just given residential and commercial properties located in McHenry County a Class 4 Building Code Effectiveness Classification.

The ISO serves independently as an advisory, rating, and statistical organization that advises the insurance and property industries by putting together information about how the community has been sticking to new building codes and implementing practices for enforcing these codes. Its Building Code Effectiveness Classifications can range from 1 to 10, with 1 being the best. The average classification for communities in Illinois is 6. McHenry County was previously ranked as a Class 9 community, so the new Class 4 represents significant improvement and will no doubt make its way into the county’s next promotional brochure printing.

Building codes are used to ensure the safety of the community. Buildings that are designed and constructed in accordance with the updated building codes are better prepared to keep their occupants safe in the event of a disaster than those that do not.

Dennis Sandquist, who is the Director of Planning and Development, believes that McHenry’s upgrade from Class 9 to Class 4 shows that the county has made advancements in how its buildings are built and maintained. This new rating puts McHenry well ahead of the state’s average and Sangquist believes it is likely due to the hard work of Adam Wallen, the County Building Enforcement Officer, and his staff.
