Federal subsidy boosts road project

The project for Randall Road was recently awarded a $20m federal grant from the McHenry County Division of Transportation.

The funding announcement came within 24 hours of the McHenry County Board adopting the county's budget for the 2024 fiscal year. The budget included a $41m allocation for Randall Road improvements.

The county’s assistant director of transportation, Scott Hennings, stated that the project has received funding from other grants in the past, and referred to this recent injection as “one piece of the funding pie."

A press release from the county shows that the project has been funded to the tune of $37.9m from the federal government, including the current commitment. According to Hennings, the award opens up $20m for additional initiatives.

The first phase of the project on Randall Road, which was completed two years ago, added lanes. This phase also improved the flow of traffic at the junction of Algonquin and Randall Roads near Lake in the Hills. It also oversaw the installation of an underpass for pedestrians, as well as asphalt walkways. Poster printing can be used on construction sites to share details about the project.

The second phase runs from Crystal Lake's Ackman Road to Lake in the Hills' Acorn Drive. According to the press release, work will start in Spring 2024 and will including enlarging the road, providing walkways, upgrading rails, and giving sidewalk accommodations.
