Area high schools students set to get robotic

The Northern Illinois Robotic League Championship is taking place this January in McHenry County. It will be the first time a high school robotics tournament has been held in this area.

The event is hosted by the FTC League and FIRST, and is meant to encourage students to get involved in STEM studies. The tournament will be made up of 24 high school teams from all over Northern Illinois.

The challenge for the students is the "cascade effect", which involves four teams competing against one another. The robot must get balls into three goals then to move them to the scoring area. This will eventually come down to a battle between two teams through qualification and elimination matches to win the tournament and to move on to the Illinois state championships.

Organizers of this event are still looking for volunteers to act as referees, equipment inspectors, and hospitality servers. Sponsorships are also available and sponsors will be recognized in the event's souvenir program.

Attendance at the event is open to the public and is free. McHenry area brochure printers may be asked to provide the souvenir program.

The Northern Illinois Robotic League Championship will be held at Lundahl Middle School in Crystal Lake on January 24 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. To find out more, visit the FIRST website.
