Plant and fungi relationship explored in Evanston

Although many may not realize it, fungi are all around them, and the vital role they play in their ecosystems will be the focus of an Evanston area event offered by Chicago Botanic Garden.

The connections between many plants and fungi, which is also referred to as mycorrhizal associations, are so vital to many species of flora that they depend on them for their survival, and this will be discussed as part of the “The Interdependence of Plants and Fungi” workshop that will be led by local mushroom expert Hunter De Luc. Those who participate may qualify to receive continuing education credits.

The two-hour long learning opportunity will explore how mushrooms and plants depend upon one another for survival through nutrient and carbohydrate sharing and other adaptations, and their role in recycling these substances will be reviewed as well. Their role in decomposition will be discussed, and the hope is that when the attendees head for home, they will have a deeper understanding and appreciation of these essential organisms.

Post-secondary institutions offering general interest and other continuing education programs may find that print shops can provide reasonably priced printing services. These may be utilized in preparing texts and their materials for a class.

Chicago Botanic Garden will welcome those who would like to broaden their understanding and appreciation of fungi on December 14. It will begin at 6:00 pm.
