Evanston okays start of theater lease negotiations

Evanston City Council has given its approval for negotiations to move forward with Strawdog Theatre Company’s designs and plans for a theater on Howard Street.

A recommendation by the Evanston Economic Development Committee giving authorization to negotiate a lease to the city manager received a unanimous vote at the City Council meeting on November 9. The Chicago private theater group hopes to build an additional structure on the eastern half of the four-parcel site at 717-723 Howard.

The property in question is located in the Eighth Ward, the alderman of which is Ann Rainey, an avid supporter of the theater project. Rainey advocated for authorization saying that her fellow aldermen should not be deterred by concerns over costs.

Alderman Rainey asked the council members to not dismiss the project before formal negotiations could take place. She pointed out that a relationship has been established with the theater, the theater had been vetted, and there had already been meetings with thei board. Moreover, the theater’s board wanted to move forward following the creation of a memorandum of understanding.

Presentation Folders of materials gathered by Strawdog and supplied to city officials outlined the theater’s history of successful fundraising, including robust foundation support. The bulk of individual donations to the theater were the result of appeals raised in May and November, which garnered $25,000.
