Celebrity librarian taking position at Evanston Library

The Evanston Public Library (EPL) has announced that it has hired Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Bird to be its Collection Development Manager.

Bird, who has spent the last 11 years working for the New York Public Library (NYPL), will begin her job as Collection Development Manager at the end of this month

She started her stint at NYPL as a Children’s Librarian and later served as a buyer for the library’s digital and Print materials, overseeing a $1.7m budget. Moreover, the librarian, who is also a children’s book author, became an influential presence in the realm of children’s literature.

Karen Danczak, EPL library director, commenting on Bird’s addition to the library, noted that her professional network, skills, and experience will augment the library’s endeavor to introduce new thoughts and energy into its programs.

For the NYPL, she developed storytelling events, lecture series, and literary salons that were enthusiastically received by parents, teachers, authors, illustrators, and librarians. In addition to her official library duties, Bird has hosted a popular School Library Journal blog that every month gets tens of thousands of visitors, as well as being a sought-after public speaker. Bird has been profiled in Forbes magazine and has served on the Newberry committee.

Bird’s initial contact with a local Print company to order a new business card printing will likely not be her last, as libraries have ample uses for Stationery printing services.
