Park in Meridian to develop new amenity for dogs

Discovery Park in South Meridian will soon have a new water feature for dogs.

Close to $7,000 was donated by Intermountain Pet Hospital, a veterinary clinic in Meridian, for the water feature. A budget amendment was approved by the Meridian City Council to accept the donation. The feature will be built in an off-leash dog area in the park.

Dom Gelsomino, President of the Meridian Parks and Recreation Commission, said that work had begun last year to bring such an amenity to the park, like that in Storey Bark Park, which has an agility course and other such features. He said he had reached out to the community for funding this amenity and the pet hospital quickly responded to the call. Printing services are often used to make announcements of such generous donations to the community.

Officials from the pet hospital and the Commission decided on a water feature as the new amenity. Although the design for the feature has not yet been finalized, the idea is a fire hydrant from which water or some other liquid would emanate.

Gelsomino said everyone was looking for something different. Once the design is finalized and constructed, it would be timed so as not to consume too much water and to be interactive for both the dog owners and the dogs.

The water feature is scheduled to be built this spring.
