New park to open in Meridian

The third regional park in Meridian will be opening later this month. Discovery Park, when completed, will be 77 acres in size. The first phase alone measures 27 acres.

Director of the Meridian Parks and Recreation Department, Steve Siddoway, said that the name of the park is derived from its emphasis on hands-on activities. One of the main features is a climbing wall, nine feet high, which has the topography of Idaho. Siddoway added that it is three dimensional—the valleys are footholds and the mountains are handholds.

Banner printing is often used for announcing the opening of such parks, which can serve a smaller region or community of a city.

Other highlights of the park will be a water and sand play area for teaching children about hydrology. Panels showing minerals, natural resources, and mammals will be part of the playground.

Other features of the park will be two softball fields, splash pad, dual ziplines, and a stage, among other amenities. There will also be an off-leash dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs and a drinking fountain for dogs and humans. There will also be three picnic shelters, benches, and shelters for shade. Walking paths and interpretive gardens will be part of the park.

The opening date for the park has been set for Saturday, July 27.
