The Galena Opportunity Fund, the Meridian City Council, and the Meridian Development Corporation (the urban renewal agency for the city) will be working together on a proposal for an urban renewal project worth close to $13m that would redevelop the community center.
A new community center and public auditorium, as well as mixed-use space, are being proposed by the Galena Opportunity Fund. A new charter school would also be constructed above the community center. This would become part of a new urban renewal district.
There would be a separate site for development just south of the center. This second site, 6.4 acres in size, would include office and retail space and residential units and be built over a parking structure with space for 168 cars that could also be used by patrons of the community center.
Residents of cities are often made aware of such new proposals and their benefits for the community through flyer printing.
Treg Bernt, a city councilman, expressed his pleasure in the creativity of the project. He believes that it will have much to offer the community for many years in the future. Luke Cavener, vice president of the city council, has found this plan to be visionary. He grew up in the city and would never have expected such a development to be built in Meridian.
