Construction to start on new housing development in Meridian

The City Council of Meridian and the Meridian Development Corporation, the city’s urban renewal agency, have approved the plan of Josh Evarts to build two four-story buildings in downtown Meridian. Evarts is a resident of and developer from Meridian.

Urban renewal administrator for Meridian, Ashley Ford-Squyres, said that the project will provide homes for some of those who work in the downtown, and help with adding density to the downtown. She added that it will be a turning point for the development of downtown Meridian. Mayor Tammy de Weerd echoed these sentiments in saying that the downtown needs more residential units that will provide a presence around the clock and increase the attraction of Meridian as a destination.

The two buildings will be in space now occupied by the old city hall and two former bank buildings. There will be 17,000 square feet of retail space on the first floor and 103 residential units on the top three floors. Brochure printing can be used to provide more information on such apartment units, including their features and monthly rental rates.

The project is expected to cost close to $20m and will be financed in part by The Pacific Companies, a company that specializes in the development of charter schools.

Evarts plans to break ground on these buildings next month.
