Davenport offers new ice-skating rink

A new ice rink for the community is now open in Davenport.

Located near the Roosevelt Community Center on Garden Avenue, it is a flood retention pond that has been filled in. News of such facilities opened to the public can be made known throughout a community with banner printing.

Rick Dunn, Alderman of the 1st Ward, said that retention ponds like this were created about 10 years ago because these areas tend to flood. He added that it has always been a desire of the city to fill them in and make an ice-skating rink out of them for the children in this part of town, as this side of the city does not have one for its children. Vander Veer Park with a rink is on the other side of town.

The retention pond was cleared of bushes and trees by the Parks Department before it was filled with water by the Davenport Fire Department. Dunn said that it was impressive to watch the Fire Department hook up the hydrant on the corner and fill the pond with water. He thanked the department its work on the rink in cold conditions.

Dunn said that the Fire Department will soon be adding another layer to the pond and that he will be adding hockey nets to the rink as well.
