A ride share service backed by the government will be offered in Norcross.
The city will be contracting with the Gateway85 Community Improvement District (CID) after approval by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners for a pilot of Southwest Gwinnett Microtransit.
There will be four micro-transit buses, each of which can carry nine people. Operations will be on demand with service from curb-to-curb within an area that includes the Amazon distribution center off Interstate 85, the Walmart on Jimmy Carter Boulevard, the Global Mall, and the Target on Holcomb Bridge Road. About 36,500 people live in this area.
Such new services can turn to flyer printing for providing more details about destinations, costs, and hours of operation.
Kirkland Carden, District 1 Commissioner, said that this micro-transit zone includes the two designated areas in Gwinnett County with lowest incomes. He said that residents will be able to use this service to get to medical appointments, go to work or school, and travel to other destinations. He added that this service is designed for people who desperately need it.
Bruce Gaynor, Mayor Pro Tempore of Norcross, expressed his thanks to Gateway 85 CID and the city for collaborating on this service that will impact many people in the county.
The buses will run from 6:00 am to 8;00 pm Monday through Saturday, and each ride will cost $3.00. The service is expected to start in September.
