WestRock Co., based in Norcross, and KapStone Paper and Packaging Co. from Northbrook, Illinois, recently announced they are merging the two companies.
Both are paper and packaging companies, with WestRock being the second largest and KapStone being the fifth largest such companies in the country.
The presence of WestRock on the West Coast will strengthen as a result of the merger and increase its offerings of paper products made with fiber, as KapStone’s paper products are made of 22 percent recovered paper and 78 percent virgin fiber.
CEO of WestRock, Steve Voorhees, said that the company has been doing well in part due to the federal tax law that went into effect last December, as well as an excellent demand for the company’s paper and packaging products. The strongest demand for its products are from retail, pizza, and e-commerce markets, in addition to healthcare and beauty products, retail, food, and liquid packaging.
KapStone employs about 800 people at its Longview paper mill. Operations at the mill are not expected to change in the immediate future, but could do so over the long term as WestRock looks to streamline its operations.
This is the fifth acquisition made by WestRock since it was founded in 2015. Brochure printing could be used when such mergers take place to inform communities of the benefits and opportunities that will result.
