Early history of Norcross
Modern Norcross may be said to go back to 1869, when J.J. Thrasher, an entrepreneur from Atlanta, bought 250 acres near what would be the first northbound stop after Atlanta on the proposed Richmond-Danville Railroad line. The Richmond-Danville, as the name implies, ran between the Virginia locations of Richmond and Danville, and the stretch of track was completed in 1856. Eventually, the company operated about 3,300 miles of track in nine different states, including Georgia. The Richmond-Danville was sold in 1894, but it still lives as part of the Norfolk Southern.
A year after Thrasher bought the property, the region was incorporated, and Thrasher named the new community Norcross in honor of his fellow entrepreneur and good friend Jonathan Norcross, who was Atlanta's fourth mayor. Over time, Norcross came to be known as “Atlanta's Favorite Summer Resort”, and the Airline Belle, a commuter train, made two round trips daily between Norcross and Atlanta, starting in 1878.
Norcross lies in Gwinnett County, and the Gwinnett County Historical Society is active and dedicated to preserving the history of the county and its communities. Society officials might consider working with brochure printers to create a booklet detailing the early history of Norcross.
Historic district and the Old Cotton Gin
In addition, Norcross is a relatively small community, and has been bypassed by major interstates, leaving the downtown, which has been designated an historic district, intact. Among the structures still standing is the Old Cotton Gin, which the Summerour family once owned. In the early 1900s, Summerour became famous for developing a new variety of cotton. The seeds were so well known that a letter addressed simply to ‘Cotton Man, Norcross, Georgia’, would be delivered and filled by workers at the gin. The building is still extant, and is located next to City Hall. Attractions, culture, and the business community
In 2013, the Old Cotton Gin was renovated and is now the Lionheart Performing Arts Center. The center offers acting, voice, dance, and playwriting classes and more. Art exhibits are also held, as well as special events such as Murder Mystery Dinner Theater performances.
