Superhero Run held in Cumming

This year, Cumming's Fowler Park was the site of the race, the eighth of its kind, which was held February 20.

Staff members of the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Forsyth County, and their boss, Janet Walden, believe all children need heroes, but children who have been abused need someone even better—superheroes. This is why the advocates have an annual 5K run to raise money, and why they call it the ‘Superhero Run’.

The advocates are trained volunteers, who work on behalf of neglected and abused children who are involved in dependency proceedings in juvenile court. As part of their duties, they act as the court's ears and eyes, becoming familiar with all adults involved with a child, and using that information to make recommendations to the juvenile court judge as to what is in the child's best interest.

Walden calls the volunteers “ordinary people who do extraordinary things” to help the most vulnerable members of the community—the children. She finds them inspiring, and says they were the inspiration for the parade theme of superheroes. Super Girl, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Thor were among those who marched. The funds raised each year go to train more volunteers.

CASA officials might create Banners for next year to mark the parade route and add to the fun. Since banners are tough, they can be used repeatedly, and work well outdoors.
